Tasting notes:

This is a vivid and alluring Chardonnay, with layered aromas of baked apple, orange blossom, pear, butterscotch and brioche. On the palate, bright, mouthwatering acidity and wet stone minerality add poise and precision to flavors of nectarine and Anjou pear, all of which are underscored by oak-inspired hints of caramel and baking spice.

About the wine:

The Chardonnay vines are between 8 and 26 years old, growing in clay loam on fractured bedrock soil straddling the entrances to both the Napa and Sanoma valleys. The vines enjoy a cooling breeze from the nearby San Pablo Bay, ideal for the grapes and helping ensure a long even growing season.

The grapes were harvested between the 28th August and 26th September. The must is 100% barrel fermented and aged in French oak barrels, 25% of which are new oak, for 11 months.

About the producer:

One of the earliest wineries in the now famous Stags Leap District, Clos du Val was founded in 1972 by American business man John Goelet and French-born winemaker Bernard Portet. Bernards father had been the manager at Chateau Lafite, where he and his brother Dominique (ex Taltarni) were raised.

Clos du Val began life as 150 acres of vineyards on some of the finest land in the Stags Leap District. In 1973 an additional 180 acres were purchased in the cooler climate Carneros region.

The winemaking team, now led by John Clewes are building further on an already outstanding reputation, utilising the very best Napa and Carneros fruit to produce handcrafted, estate wines famed for their balance, elegance and complexity.
