Tasting notes:

'Tasted single blind against its peers. The Rieussec 2007 has a subtle nose of dried honey, pear, a touch of quince and crushed stone on the nose, the oak better integrated than last year. The palate is well-balanced with stem ginger and honeycomb on the entry. It is linear compared to its peers, there is no flourish on the finish as yet, but it has fine definition and hints of tangy marmalade and lemongrass that should become more accentuated with time.'

Neal Martin. Tasted January 2011. Wine Advocate.February, 2012

About the wine:

A cold, rainy winter, early budburst and very mild spring temperatures stimulated the vines’ growth. This was followed by a moderately hot summer that continued until August without excessive temperatures. Fine weather stabilized in early September, ensuring that the grapes were able to ripen correctly. The grapes underwent a careful harvest, selecting only the best grapes that were properly affected by Botrytis.

After pressing, the must is transferred to stainless steel tanks and oak barrels, at least 50% of which were new, for fermentation and ageing. The wine spends 18 to 26 months in barrel before bottling.

About the producer:

Château Rieussec is one of the richest and most exotic of all Sauternes, producing particularly good wines from the late 1980s and the mid 1990s. Rieussec has been owned by Domaines Barons de Rothschild since 1985 and is located at one of the highest points of Sauternes in the village of Fargues where its vineyards border those of Château d`Yquem.

Rieussec's 75 hectares of vineyards are planted with 89% Sémillon, 8% Sauvignon Blanc and 3% Muscadelle. Yields are low and the grapes are fermented in stainless steel tanks and oak casks before being matured in oak barriques for 18-26 months.

Rieussec produces a classic full-bodied Sauternes that is deep golden-yellow in colour and packed with lusciously sweet, honeyed fruits. Classsfied as a 1er Cru Classé, its best vintages rival those from d`Yquem.

Food Match:

The Chateau Rieussec 2007 is a rich, sweet wine best served chilled. Whilst it will be a match for any rich pudding, it would also go very very well with a blue cheese, game terrines and most famously, with Foie Gras.
