Tasting Notes:

Black cherry with good depth of colour. An intense nose of fine wood, leather, cigar box, dark chocolate & fruit combine with sweet tannins to produce a beautifully balanced, elegant red wine. Full and powerful on the attack with good balance. A meaty, juicy mouth feel with sweet tannins. Long, lingering finish.

About the wine:

Based in Ribera del Duero, Dominio de Cair embraces the innovative viticultural and winemaking techniques typical of the wines of Bodegas Luis Cañas and Bodegas Amaren. Vineyards are situated between 800 and 900m above sea level, and are exposed to the typical Ribera del Duero extreme weather conditions – 400mm annual rainfall, long hot summers and wide diurnal temperatures. Vines are aged between 40 - 50 years with a maximum yield of 3.500kg / HA.

Grapes are picked by hand and placed in small plastic crates. Upon entering the winery, bunches undergo a manual selection and then individual grapes are sorted based on their weight. Following this double selection process, they are destemmed and crushed before undergoing alcoholic fermentation in small stainless steel tanks.

After its primary fermentation, malolactic fermentation takes place in oak barrels. The Cair spends 14 months ageing in new oak barrels, 60% of which are French oak and 40% of which are American oak.The wine then spends a further 12 months ageing in the bottle.

About the Producer:

Dominio de Cair is a new winery established in the ribera del Duero region of Spain by the Riojan stalwart Juan Luis Canas. Jaun Luis spent several years visiting the region carefully inspecting vines to find those best suited for his needs. Eventually he found the type of vineyard with the type and quality of soil he considered suitable in the vicinity of La Aguilera. The vineyard had low yielding old vines, some centenarians, to allow him to select the best fruit for the wines.

After consolidating its two wineries in Rioja (Bodegas Luis Canas and Bodegas Amaren) he teamed up with Juan Jose Iribecamps to establish Dominio de Cair and building a brand new winery equipped with modern winemaking equipment. The winery controls 70 hectares, 12 of which are owned by the winery, the rest belonging to suppliers in the area under the strict control and management of the Bodegas.
